Today marks the release date of one of the most controversial ticketing systems ever released in Melbourne: It is called the myki. Started in 2005, marked for release in 2007, and then delayed till 2009. Technically the government says that the system should be running by the end of 2009, and it is... ...or so we thought. Currently, myki is restricted to metro trains, buses and trams will not be operating it till 2010. Furthermore, the only way to get a myki is to order it online (for promo reasons, it'll be free for a limited time), but that means they have to mail it to you. Anyone hear of Australia Post mailing something to you in 3 days, nearing New Years Eve, on regular, non-express, snail mail? Yeah, didn't think so. This embarrassment on the government's part is sure to see a rise in complaints, but since nobody in the metro can use one yet (as there is no way to obtain a card for use by 2009), we'll wait and see. I, for one, have ordered one... (get one from here now)
